Hey Hawk Crew Leaders (HCL for short)!
Thank you all for coming to the training on May 8th. Ms. Reilly and I were excited to see your enthusiasm and commitment to help make EHS a welcoming place for new students, especially freshmen.
We wanted to take a minute to make sure you understood why we made you do some of the things we did with you that day. It was not just to make you feel or look silly. We chose each activity with a specific reason in mind. Each was meant to help you be a more successful Hawk Crew Leader.
GO BIG!
This activity is to help you practice having a "big" presence when working with your freshmen. Big does not mean loud, but it means having confidence, good eye contact, and good posture. It means commanding people's attention.
The various locations you were asked to act out challenge you to be aware of your surroundings, respond with intent in different situations and contribute to the group's success.
This was the first activity and it was awkward for many of you because you did not know each other all that well. Some of you were afraid to look silly or weren't sure what to do in any some of the locations you were given. This is EXACTLY how your freshmen will feel on orientation day. You will need strategies to help create an environment that makes them feel secure enough to participate.
Yes, and...
The goal of this activity is for HCL's to practice having a "yes, and" attitude. This allows the Hawk Crew leader to validate a freshman's statement, however negative it might be and turn it into a positive. Some of your freshmen might not be immediately on board with the activities we have planned. It is your job to acknowledge those feelings and turn them around to help them get on board. This activity was meant to help you think on your feet, positively respond to any situation and build on what is being said and done to contribute positively to the group.
What Every 8th Grader Should Know
Here, you were asked to put yourself in the shoes of someone who is leaving the comfort and safety of CMS and entering EHS in the fall. They have a summer of nervous excitement ahead of them. What can they do before they get here that will help them get ready even before Orientation Day.
Thank you again for your feedback and your commitment! Together we can make EHS the high school we want it to be!
